Magic: The Gathering — The Complete Comic King Guide
Magic: The Gathering is the original trading card game — the deepest game ever printed, played for over thirty years. Comic King carries Magic in Edmonton with a comic-shop twist: alongside Commander decks and current boosters, we spotlight the Universes Beyond crossover sets that bring Marvel, Spider-Man, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into the game — real Magic cards wearing the universes our shelves are built on. Anything not on the shelf, we can special-order on request.

Universes Beyond — Magic Meets the Comic Universes
Universes Beyond is Magic's licensed-crossover line: fully playable, tournament-real Magic cards set in other universes. For a comic shop, it's the bridge — comic readers discover the game through characters they love, and Magic players discover our comic walls. The comic-universe releases so far:
Find them near the matching shelves: Spider-Man Magic lives beside our Amazing Spider-Man wall, because that's exactly who it's for.
Play Booster vs Collector Booster — Know the Difference
Every modern Magic set comes in two kinds of packs, and knowing the difference saves money in both directions. Play Boosters (around $5–6) are the game itself — the standard pack, every card obtainable, premium versions appearing only occasionally. Collector Boosters (around $20–30) are the luxury pack: guaranteed foils, borderless and showcase art treatments, and the exclusive chase cards — serialized numbered cards, and set-specific spectacles like TMNT's Eastman variants — that mostly never appear in Play Boosters. The short version: same game cards, different objects — Play sells the game, Collector sells the treatments. Players buy Play; collectors and graders buy Collector; nobody should buy the wrong one by accident on our watch.
Every Format You Can Buy
Screen & Series Status
Updated July 2026: the crossover era is in full swing — Spider-Man, the Ninja Turtles and Marvel Super Heroes have all joined the game, with the Marvel partnership set to continue. New Magic sets release every few weeks year-round; ask at the counter what's newest, and which crossover is on the shelf right now.
Collector's Corner — Chases, Grading & We Buy
The modern chase pyramid tops out at serialized cards — individually numbered, pack-pulled, and instantly gradeable — with borderless character art and creator-variant cards (like the TMNT Eastman treatments) close behind. We broker CGC grading submissions for pack-fresh hits. Have old Magic cards? Bring them in. Honest expectations: most cards from the mid-90s onward are bulk, but early sets, Reserved List cards, and certain-era foils can be genuinely valuable — we check together with live comps on screen, and we buy collections large and small.
FAQ - the three we hear most
What's the difference between a Play Booster and a Collector Booster?
Play Boosters are the standard pack — the game itself, around a third the price. Collector Boosters are the premium pack: guaranteed foils, special art treatments, and exclusive chase cards like serialized numbers that mostly don't appear in Play Boosters. Same game cards, different objects. Buy Play to play, Collector to collect — and ask us before buying a box of either.
Are my old Magic cards worth anything?
Honestly: most Magic cards ever printed are bulk worth pennies — but the exceptions are real. Cards from the game's first few years, anything on the Reserved List, and certain older foils can be worth serious money, and condition multiplies everything. Bring them in: we sort the exceptions from the bulk in front of you, with live market comps on screen, and make fair offers either way.
I don't play Magic — can I still collect the Marvel and TMNT cards?
Absolutely, and you're exactly who those sets are for. The crossover cards are collectibles in their own right — borderless character art, creator variants, serialized chases — and plenty of people collect their favourite hero's cards without ever shuffling a deck. Start with one Collector Booster of the set your universe lives in — the treatments inside are the collectibles — and we'll show you what exists for the world you love.
